Inspiration
Background: Overlooking a paddock
under big East Anglian skies, the garden
of a late 18th-century mill barn
conversion in a small rural village has
been cleverly designed to blend
contemporary and traditional seamlessly.
Understanding how our environment
influences our well-being, the owners
wanted to spend more time eating and
relaxing in their outdoor space, having
lived and worked in Australia some years
ago. Collaborating with garden designer
Chris Deakin, the owners wanted separate
yet flowing zones for their garden. This
has been achieved, retaining aspects of
an English cottage garden through layout
and planting, combining a modern feel to
the cooking, dining and seating area.
Solution: The dining area has a weather-
controlled roof and sides, which can be
enclosed with a screen and gliding glass
doors. The owners can pick their produce
just before cooking from the adjacent
cube-shaped box hedge framed fruit and
vegetable planting area.
To ensure all diners feel equally comfortable,
they are seated on Equinox carver chairs
with 316 marine grade stainless steel frames,
Graphite arms and Platinum Textilene®
slings. The Equinox 3m dining table with
Ash Ceramic top seats eight generously.
The seating area uses two large Mercury
Deep Seating configurations with
seat and back cushions in waterproof
Sunbrella® Rain Lead Chiné, each
seating four, separated by a firepit table.
Complementing the right angles used
throughout the landscaping, the Mercury
Deep Seating maintains the same box
shape whilst offering a slight softening
with the curved backs and arms.
The 316 marine grade stainless steel
frames selected on the Equinox Dining
furniture and Mercury Deep Seating
subtly link the two seating areas.
